Meet the class
During the academic year 2012-2013 (or 2555-2556 following the Thai calendar) the Buddha Kasettra School, also thanks to ChuayDek, gave shelter, food, education and care to 120 children in need who originally came from several mountain villages in the northern areas of Tak, Mae Hong Sorn and Chiang Mai. At the beginning of the school year (may) some kids travel 7 to 8 hours on a bus to get to the school, and travel back home only in October and in mid March-April, for the longer period of school closure. The kids with no parents, relatives or tutors often stay in the School during the holiday season.
In May 2013 the Thai Government announced the closure of nearly 15,000 small schools in rural areas. Many children, especially in the mountain areas of the North West, are at risk of losing access to education. With this new national scenario, it is foreseen that in the academic year 2013-2014, starting in May 2013, the number of the students living and studying at the Buddha Kasettra School will increase.
